Salastina invites listeners to join with composers, musicians, and artists to celebrate the beauty of the past and present, and to carry it into the future with a spirit of inclusiveness.

With a repertoire spanning five centuries, Salastina is leading an ever more beautiful and inclusive context for the art of chamber music by integrating the music of the past and present in socially, artistically, and intellectually responsible ways.

In a complicated world, it is critical, heartening, and restorative to experience the sublime. Contemporary society is consumed by issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion that are difficult to talk about. Salastina is committed to the idea that thoughtfully-chosen and presented musical works contribute to these conversations more powerfully than words alone. The beauty and abstraction of music have the benefit of triggering fewer defenses.

Salastina advocates for beauty. All great music — from classic to not yet so — bears intrepid and thoughtful exploration. This is the guiding principle behind both Sounds Genius, a concert format in which we dive into one canonical master work, and Sounds Unknown, a concert format exploring music that has been wrongfully buried by time and fate. We also give special priority to premieres by living composers, taking steps to ensure they both reflect and speak to the demographics of our community.

No need to roll over, Beethoven: all of this shines alongside the traditional chamber music canon, amplifying awe for the depth of creativity that has always been a hallmark of the art form. In these ways, Salastina weaves a cohesive narrative thread through the musical, social, and cultural past and present.

Salastina performances feed the curiosity of listeners of all types inside the concert hall. Through Sounds Promising, we work with gifted young instrumentalists and composers to prepare them for their place within it. By educating the next generation of citizen artists, we welcome their voices into the conversation, and prepare them to lead it into the future.
